Grow in creating space for God.
(actually, 'twas my old year's resolution as well...)

1. Zondervan NIV Study Bible, Compact Edition
I love this study Bible because it provides notes that help you do the work rather than doing the work for you (note that this is an older color combination...you can get the newer color combos more cheaply). (*****)
2c. The Divine Hours: Prayers for Wintertime
These three manuals for prayer make extensive use of Scripture, especially the Psalms, and have transformed my devotional life. (*****)
3. The Open Gate: Celtic Prayers for Growing Spiritually by David Adam
These prayers have amazing depth through their simplicity of language and structure. Themes are organized around the flow of prayer in worship and include Preparation, Candle Prayers, Adoration, Confession, Intercession, The Offering, The Eucharistic Prayer, Thanksgiving, Dedication and Blessings. While the American version of this book is currently out of print, it's worth tracking down a copy or checking out the UK version (*****)
4. The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions
These thematically arranged prayers are extraordinary in their depth, their authenticity and their God-centeredness. Main sections include Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Redemption and Reconciliation, Penitence and Deprecation, Needs and Devotions, Holy Aspirations, Approach to God, Gifts of Grace, Service and Ministry, Valediction and A Week of Shared Prayers. (*****)
5. Handstiched Book of Kells Lined Generatio
My favorite blank book to use for journaling (other themes in the Book of Kells series include Evangeli, Iudaea and Quoniam) because it's acid-free, has cool handstiching, has a beautiful celtic art cover and lays flat! (*****)
John Piper: God Is the Gospel: Meditations on God's Love As the Gift of Himself
Piper has always expressed what has become a central part of my spirituality, my journey and that is that God is most glorified when I find my greatest delight in Him...looking forward to these meditations.
David Adam: The Road Of Life: Reflections on Searching and Longing
This is my second time going through this book...but more slowly this time...more deliberately...spending time in the Exercises at the end of each chapter. (*****)
The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius: St. Ignatius' Profound Precepts of Mystical Theology
While taking a look at Benedictine Spirituality, I kept running across references to these spiritual exercises. Time to check them out.
Ruth Haley Barton: Sacred Rhythms: Arranging Our Lives for Spiritual Transformation
Having sat under Ruth's direction and teaching, I continue to be challenged and encouraged by the work that she has done here. (*****)
Chris Tomlin: Arriving
You want authentic praise? You got it. (*****)
Matt Redman: Facedown
I had the chance to be at Facedown: A Gathering for Songwriters where this album was recorded live...it seems to me that being broken is a prerequisite to being able to fall facedown in heart as well as body. (*****)
Sufjan Stevens: Illinois
If you don't think we're all broken, then listen to John Wayne Gacy, Jr. and see what you think then... (*****)
Over the Rhine: Ohio
The song, Changes Come, found on this album, is an incredibly moving song of the journey that comes from a place of brokenness. The aching beauty of the lyrics and music actually makes my heart physically race. An even more moving version of the song can be found on the live album, Changes Come, which can be found on Over the Rhine's web site, (*****)
Passion Worship Band: Passion: Hymns Ancient and Modern
The past always shapes and guides our journey in the present. These fresh arrangements of hymns of our heritage bring together the past and the present powerfully. Perhaps the most moving selection, though, is the spoken creedal statement, Phos Hilaron (*****)
